১৯৭১ সাল। এখনকার মতো ফেসবুক, ইউটিউব বা কোনো সামাজিক যোগাযোগ মাধ্যম ছিল না। ফলে বাংলার মাটিতে প্রকৃতপক্ষে কী ঘটছে বাইরে থেকে তার সঠিক তথ্য পাওয়া ছিল খুবই কঠিন। স্যাটেলাইট টিভিতেও এই সংবাদ সম্প্রচার করা ছিল দূরহ ব্যাপার। শুধু কয়েকটি আন্তর্জাতিক পত্রিকার মাধ্যমে টুকটাক অল্প কিছু তথ্য জানতে পারছিল ইউরোপ-আমেরিকা-আফ্রিকার জনগণ।

ঠিক এই সুযোগটাকে কাজে লাগিয়ে বাঙালি জাতির মুক্তিযুদ্ধকে নিয়ে ষড়যন্ত্রে মেতে ওঠে পাকিস্তানি সামরিক জান্তা ও তাদের রক্তচোষা রাজনীতিকরা। বহির্বিশ্বে তারা এটিকে গৃহযুদ্ধ বলে অপপ্রচার চালাতে শুরু করে। তারা বিভিন্ন দেশ ঘুরে ঘুরে বলতে থাকে- 'বাংলার মাটিতে কোনো গণহত্যা, ধর্ষণ ও লুটপাট হয়নি। অল্প কিছু দুর্বৃত্তকে দমানোর জন্য পাকিস্তানি সেনারা অভিযান চালাচ্ছে।' পশ্চিম পাকিস্তানিদের কাছে বাংলাদেশের মুক্তিযুদ্ধ সম্পর্কে নিয়মিত এরকম তথ্য পাওয়ার কারণে, বিশ্বের অন্যান্য রাষ্ট্রগুলো এখানকার প্রকৃত অবস্থা সম্পর্কে অন্ধকারে ছিল।
একারণে, পরিস্থিতির গুরুত্ব আঁচ করতে পেরে, বাংলাদেশের রণাঙ্গণে জীবন বাজি রাখা মুক্তিযোদ্ধাদের পক্ষে প্রচারণা চালাতে বিশ্ব ভ্রমণে বের হন ভারতের প্রধানমন্ত্রী শ্রীমতি ইন্দিরা গান্ধী। তার উদ্দেশ্য ছিল- পাকিস্তানিদের হাতে নির্মম হত্যাকাণ্ডের শিকার লাখ লাখ বাঙালির আর্তনাদ ও সংঘবদ্ধ ধর্ষণের শিকার নারীদের চিৎকার সারা বিশ্বকে জানিয়ে দেওয়া। তিনি চেয়েছিলেন, পাকিস্তানিদের অমানুষিক নির্যাতনের কারণে বাংলার সীমান্ত পাড়ি দিয়ে ভারতে আশ্রয় নেওয়া প্রায় এক কোটি বাঙালির মানবেতর জীবনের কথা বিশ্ববাসীকে জানাতে।
এজন্য ১৯৭১ সালের ২৪ অক্টোবর ১৯ দিনের জন্য বিশ্ব সফরে বের হন ইন্দিরা গান্ধী। ব্রিটিশ প্রধানমন্ত্রী এডওয়ার্ড হিথের কাছে বাংলাদেশের যুদ্ধ পরিস্থিতির প্রকৃত চিত্র তুলে ধরেন তিনি। বেলজিয়াম, অস্ট্রিয়া, ব্রিটেন, ফ্রান্স, জার্মানি, আমেরিকাসহ অনেক দেশে গিয়ে তাদের সরকার ও রাষ্ট্রপ্রধানদের কাছে বাংলাদেশের সার্বিক পরিস্থিতি তুলে ধরেন। ৪ ও ৫ নভেম্বর আমেরিকার প্রেসিডেন্ট রিচার্ড নিক্সনের সঙ্গে বৈঠক হয় তার। কিন্তু নিক্সন বাঙালির মহান মুক্তিযুদ্ধকে পাকিস্তানের গৃহযুদ্ধ বলে হালকাভাবে উড়িয়ে দেওয়ার চেষ্টা করে। বৈঠকেই এর তীব্র প্রতিবাদ জানান শ্রীমতি গান্ধী।
পরের দিন, ৬ নভেম্বর যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের কলাম্বিয়া বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে এক ভাষণে আমেরিকার জনগণের দৃষ্টি আকর্ষণ করে তিনি বলেন, 'পাকিস্তানি সামরিক সরকার ২৫ মার্চ পূর্ববাংলায় এক নারকীয় হত্যাযজ্ঞ ঘটিয়েছে। পাকিস্তানিদের চরম অত্যাচারের মুখে লক্ষ লক্ষ বাঙালি সীমান্ত অতিক্রম করে ভারতে আশ্রয় নিতে বাধ্য হয়েছে। পূর্ববাংলার মানুষ এখন স্বাধীনতার দাবিতে সোচ্চার, তাদের নেতা শেখ মুজিবকে গ্রেপ্তার করে পাকিস্তানে চালান দেওয়া হয়েছে। ঘটনার অনিবার্যতা তাদের পৃথক রাষ্ট্র গঠনে বাধ্য করছে।'
৭ নভেম্বর তার ফ্রান্স সফরের আগে বৈঠকের প্রস্তাব দেয় পাকিস্তানি জান্তা ইয়াহিয়া খান। কিন্তু তা প্রত্যাখ্যান করেন মিসেস গান্ধী। বাংলার অকুতোভয় তরুণ মুক্তিযোদ্ধাদের প্রতি মুগ্ধতা এবং নিপীড়িত বাঙালি জাতির প্রতি ভারতবাসীর গভীর ভালোবাসার বহির্প্রকাশ ছিল এটি।
মূলত ভারতের সরকার প্রধানের এই বিশ্ব সফরের কারণেই বিশ্ববাসী বাংলাদেশের মুক্তিযুদ্ধ এবং পাকিস্তানি হানাদারদের পাষবিকতা সম্পর্কে প্রকৃত তথ্য জানতে পারে। ফলে বিশ্বজুড়ে জনমত গড়ে উঠতে শুরু করে মুক্তিযুদ্ধের পক্ষে। বাংলাদেশের মহান স্বাধীনতা অর্জনের ইতিহাসের একটি উল্লেখযোগ্য অধ্যায় এটি। এছাড়াও এর আগে ও পরে জাতিসংঘ, বিশ্ব শান্তি সংঘ এবং রাশিয়ার (তৎকালীন সোভিয়েত ইউনিয়ন) নেতাদের সঙ্গেও একাধিক বৈঠক করেন ইন্দিরা গান্ধী। ভারতের কারণেই পরবর্তীতে বাংলাদেশের মুক্তিযুদ্ধে সমর্থন দেয় পরাশক্তি রাশিয়া। ফলে চীন ও যুক্তরাষ্ট্র পাকিস্তানের পক্ষে সরাসরি যুদ্ধে অংশ নিতে ভীত হয়। ফলে পাকিস্তানি হানাদারদের হারিয়ে দীর্ঘ দুই যুগের দাসত্বের শৃঙ্খল থেকে মুক্তি লাভ করে আপামর বাঙালি।

Dear Prime Minister,
My colleagues in the Government of India and I were deeply touched by the message which His Excellency the Acting President Syed Nazrul Islam and you sent to me on December 4. On its receipt, Government of India once again considered your request to accord recognition to the People's Republic of Bangladesh which you lead with such dedication. I am glad to inform you that in the light of the circumstance which prevail at present, Government of India have decided to grant the recognition. This morning I made a statement on the subject in our Parliament. I enclose a copy.
The people of Bangladesh have gone through much suffering. You young men are engaged in a self-saonficinq struggle for freedom and democracy. The people of India are also fighting in defence of the same values. I have no doubt that this companionship in endeavour and sacrifice will strengthen our dedication to great causes and the friendship between our two peoples. However long the road and however exacting the sacrifice that our two peoples may be called upon to make in the future. I am certain that we shall emerge triumphant. I take this opportunity to convey to you personally, to your colleagues and to the heroic people of Bangladesh my greetings and best wishes. I should also like to take this opportunity to convey through you to His Excellency Syed Nazrul Islam, Acting President of the People's Republic of Bangladesh, the assureances of my highest esteem
