Ethiopian government forces have been battling rebels in the Tigris region for the past year. Human rights groups have accused government forces of committing crimes against humanity in the region. Addis Ababa fired seven senior UN officials last September for "interfering in internal affairs" for commenting on the issue.
Recently, new tensions in the country began to rise. The Biden administration last Saturday ordered non-emergency U.S. government officials to leave the country, fearing the situation could worsen. Denmark and Italy also advised their citizens to leave the country.
