As soon as December arrives, the colors of victory spread all around. The grief of losing the children of Bengal is as overwhelming as the celebration of victory. On the day of the great victory, which was celebrated two days ago, the unique symbol of the glory of Bangladesh - the national flag of Bangladesh - flew in the air as the spirit of respect and glory was seen all around. None of us knows how important the national flag of Bangladesh surrounded by red and green is in the life and history of Bengalis. However, the current flag that we see everywhere was not like that before. Although the current flag was designed by Kamrul Hasan, the design of the flag that was used in the liberation war of Bangladesh and some time before that is different. Today's article is arranged with the reasons and events of the first flag of Bangladesh and the current features of the flag.
Bangladesh - a name earned in exchange for a lot of blood. The design of the flag of independent Bangladesh was done some time before independence. The design of the first flag of Bangladesh is in the hands of some activists and student leaders of the 'Swadhin Bangla Nucleus' organization. On June 7, 1980, the initial design of the flag was done in Room 106 of the then Iqbal Hall (now Sergeant Zahurul Haque Hall) of Dhaka University. The designers were: , Swapan Kumar Chowdhury; Jagrannath University (then Jagannath College) BCL leader Nazrul Islam, Comilla District BCL General Secretary and Central Student Leader Shivnarayan Das, Engineering University BCL General Secretary Hasanul Haque Inu, Student Leader Yusuf Salahuddin Ahmed, Kamrul Alam Khan (Khasru) and many more.
According to the decision made there, the design of the flag with the map of yellow Bangladesh in the middle of the red sun on the green background was finalized. This map of Bangladesh was added to the flag for a special reason. One of the most popular and widely used slogans of that time was "Joy Bangla". In that case a question remains, which Bengali is being spoken? East Bengal, West Bengal or two Bengalis? It was then decided that the flag would be a land portrait or map of the then East Bengal (present day Bangladesh). Interestingly, the decision was also taken that the map would not be needed if the country became independent - which was later true of the flag (current flag) designed by Patua Kamrul Hasan.
Kamrul Alam Khan (Khasru) then sews a red circle in the middle of a large piece of green cloth from a Bihari tailor's shop in Dhaka New Market with the clothes given by Bazlur Rahman Lashkar, the owner of Apollo Tailors. According to a statement made by Shivnarayan Das during the reminiscence of the incident, the flag was to be sewn at about 12 o'clock in the night and the work was done by picking up the tailors at midnight. Hearing about the work of the flag but the tailors did not object at all but they did the work without pay.
Later, Yusuf Salauddin Ahmed and Hasanul Haque Inu took a map book from Enamul Haque in room 312 of Quaid-e-Azam Hall (now Titumir Hall) of East Pakistan University of Engineering (now BUET) and drew a map of East Pakistan on tracing paper. Student leader Shivnarayan Das then drew the map in the middle of the red circle of the flag using yellow paint and match sticks. This is how the first national flag of Bangladesh was made which was first hoisted on 2nd March 1971 at Battala of Dhaka University.
The first lifting was done by the student leader and the then vice president of 'Daksu' ASM Abdur Rob, at that time other student leaders and activists were also present. Then, on the eve of the liberation war, on 23rd March, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman hoisted the national flag at his residence at Dhanmondi No. 32. The red circle of the flag was a symbol of the rising red sun. According to the CIA World Factbook , the green color of the flag was used to denote the green nature of Bangladesh. The flag at that time was a map of Bangladesh (then East Bengal) in the middle of a bright green red circle.
After the independence of Bangladesh in 1972, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman instructed Patua Kamrul Hasan to redesign, interpret and report on the flag. The mapless flag designed by Kamrul Hasan is now widely used as the flag of independent Bangladesh. Qamrul Hasan's but the current flag took a long time to measure and build. The Flag Rules of the People's Republic of Bangladesh were enacted in 1972 for the flag. According to these rules, the size and nature of the current national flag is as follows:
1) The flag will be dark green and there will be a red circle near the center of a green rectangle with a ratio of length to width of 10: 7.
2) The radius of the red circle will be one-fifth of the length of the flag. The center of the red circle will be the intersection of the perpendicular line drawn from the nine-twentieth part of the length of the flag and the horizontal line drawn from the midpoint of the width of the flag.
(That is, if the length of the flag is 10 feet, the width will be 6 feet, the radius of the red circle will be 2 feet;
3) The green background of the flag will have Prussian Brilliant Green H-2RS50 parts color per thousand and the red circle will have Prussian Brilliant Orange H-2RS60 parts color per thousand.
Official guidelines for the use of flags are different sizes, such as 10 by 6 feet (3.0 by 1.8 meters) or 5 by 3 feet (1.52 by 0.91 meters) or 2.5 by 1.5 feet for use in buildings. (80 by 480 mm). Flags for use in automobiles come in a variety of sizes - 15 by 9 inches (360 by 230 millimeters) for large vehicles and 10 by 8 inches (250 by 150 millimeters) for small and medium vehicles. Table sizes are 10 by 6 inches (250 by 150 millimeters) for all international and bilateral table flags.
In independent Bangladesh, the national flag has to be hoisted on 26th March, Independence Day, 16th December, Victory Day, Eid-e-Miladunnabi and any other day notified by the government at all government and private buildings and at the offices and consular posts of diplomatic missions abroad. There are rules to keep the national flag of Bangladesh at half-mast on 21st February, International Mother Language Day or Martyrs' Day, 15th August, National Mourning Day and any other day notified by the government.
The dark green color of the current national flag designed by Patua Kamrul Hasan is a symbol of green nature and youth of Bangladesh. And the red circle in the middle indicates the rising sun as well as the blood and sacrifice of the people of Bangladesh. One of the reasons for the omission of the map of Bangladesh in the current flag is the complexity of sewing the map in the right way on both sides of the flag. The flag of Bangladesh, designed by Kamrul Hasan and made according to all the rules, was officially and fully adopted as the national flag of Bangladesh on 16 January 1972.
The national flag of the People's Republic of Bangladesh is one of the bearers of the glorious episode of independent Bangladesh. There is a story of immense self-sacrifice and heroism of Bangladeshis hidden in the holes of red and green. The arrival of the flag from the past to the present has witnessed a bloody chapter. Bangladesh's sovereignty, glory, nationality and great sacrifice are mixed in the red-green of the national flag.
